Abstract: | Cervical cancer is one of the commonest female cancers in Sudan due to the absence of HR-HPV screening and vaccination programs.The aim of this study was to screen forthe existence of cervical cancerrelated herpes viruses (HPV, EBV, CMV and EBV) among Sudanese women with cervical cancer. This was analytical case control study conducted in Khartoum state-Sudan during period from October 2013 to June 2016. One hundred and eighty paraffin-embedded tissue blocks were included in this study. Of the 180 tiaaue’s blocks, 98 blocks were from patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma (case group) and 82 were from cervical tissue’s blocks malignancy-free (control group). Screening for herpes viruses (HPV, EBV, CMV and EBV) were performed using Immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques. HR-HPV infection was detected in 28.6% of the cases, and 2.4% of the controls.Association between HR-HPVand cervical carcinoma was found to be statistically significant P < 0.0001. CMV infection was detected in 15.3% of the cases and 1.2% of the controls with statistically significant difference, the P < 0.0001. HSV-2 revealed positivity in 6.1% of the cases and in 1.2% of the controls with no statistically significant correlation. EBV was positive in 2% of the cases, while none of the control was found positive. HR-HPV and EBV are prevalent etiological factors that contribute to the etiology of cervical carcinoma in Sudan. HSV-2 and EBVwere insignificantly found in cervical cancerous leions. |
