dc.description.abstract Abstract: Background: Tuberculosis remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with the highest incidence rate in Asia (59%) and Africa (26%). Approximately 4% of all new TB cases and 20% of previously treated cases are multidrug-resistant TB (MDR TB), which is characterized by resistance to isoniazid and rifampicin. Sudan shoulders 8% of the tuberculosis burden in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, it has a large population of IDPs, the bad conditions increased the prevalence rate up to 209 cases per 100,000 of the population and 50,000 incident cases in 2009. This study aims to explore the epidemiology (prevalence) of TB and look for the risk factors associated with the disease pre and after TB program activities (interventions). Methods: A community-based, descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to study the epidemiology of tuberculosis in Alsalam IDPs camp in South Darfur state 2019 – 2021. The sample was selected to represent all sectors within the camp, it was determined by the following formula: N = (z^2 (p.q))/d^2, which included 401 households in the first part of the study and 398 in the second part of the study. The intervention applied after the first part of the study, include the health education, TB program normal activities, community outreach, reactivate TBMU in the camp etc, data were collected by a questionnaire, used mobile KoBo toolbox application, one person from each selected household was interviewed, besides key informant persons were interviewed, checklist and TB Test; Zihl Nelson Stain method test performed for sputum to confirm all suspected cases, data were transferred from KoBo, cleared, and analysed by the SPSS version 26. Results: In the first part of the study November 2020, the prevalence rate of tuberculosis was 2.2% (9 cases), 54.86% (220) of the targeted group knew that the signs and symptoms of tuberculosis were chronic coughs, 24.9% (100) of people mentioned tuberculosis is transmitted through cough and air. On the other hand, 53.9% (216) of the targeted group (or people) don’t know the methods of tuberculosis transmission. The study showed a strong link between HHs where more than one person sleeping in a room and TB infection, where those who slept as 3 persons and more in one room had a high prevalence of 3(0.75%). The study found that the prevalence of TB was 1.25 % (5) lower among those who received health education messages than those who did not. In the second part of the study no positive case detected, the study revealed that the interventions have positive outcome a cross studied TB risk factors. Conclusion: The epidemiology of TB in the camp studied during the period, the prevalence rate of the disease in the first part of the study found to be 2.2%, After the TB program interventions no case detected in the second part of the study, and it had been confirmed that there were many factors contributed to the high prevalence of TB.
