Exploring Problems of The Reading Comprehension among 3rd Class Tertiary Level Students

Abstract

Abstract The current study aims to investigate the reading comprehension difficulties that face EFL learners at university level. The main problem underlying this work is that many students are unable to continue to understand what they read using the target language. The main cause behind this problem is the students’ lack of practicing reading comprehension inside and outside the lecture room. In addition to that, both test and questionnaire are administered, the questionnaire for English teachers and the test for the 3rd class students, at Shendi University, Department of English language, Faculty of Arts, to identify and recognize their attitudes about reading comprehension. Furthermore, the present study aims to suggest some strategies, techniques, procedures and ideas that may help students improve their reading comprehension skill. The sample of this study consists of (15) English teachers at Shendi University, as well as (50) students from Faculty of Arts. This study is based on the main assumption that problems of teaching strategies, and student's attention toward English play a major role in hindering students’ comprehension. In addition to that, the researcher suggested many solutions for these problems. The researcher used two methods, the experimental analytical method, and descriptive analytical methods. The researcher deduced that the students of English at Shendi University face a problem in comprehension. The researcher recommends the students to practice the skill of reading comprehension, in addition to indicating their problems and solving them. Moreover, the researcher advises teachers to aid their students and motivate them to practice reading comprehension inside and outside the lecture room. Also, the research recommends that students should be provided with suitable and suitable environment that enables them to practice and reading comprehension very well المستخلص تهدف الدراسة للتحقق من بعض مشكلات فهم القراءة التي تواجه دراسي اللغة الانجليزية كلغة أجنبية بالجامعات ، وتمكن المشكلة الرئيسية وراء هذه الدراسة في أن العديد من الطلاب ليس لديهم القدرةو على فهم ما يقرؤونه جيداً والسبب الرئيسي وراء كل هذا هو عدم ممارسة الطلاب للقراءة في بيئة الجامعة سواء كان ذلك من داخل القاعات وخارجها . ولأجل هذا قام الباحث بتصميم استبيان واختبار الاستبيان وجهه لأساتذة اللغة الإنجليزوية اما الاختبار فقد كان لطلاب الفصل الدراسي الثالث بكلية الآداب في جامعة شندي ، وذلك للتعرف على مستواهم في مهارة الفهم القرائي مع اقتراح طرق وأساليب تساعد الطلاب على تطوير تلك المهارة تتطون عينة هذه الدراسة من خمسة عشر أستاذاً بالجامعة بالإضافة على خمسين طالباً من كلية الآداب استندت هذه الدراسة على الفرضية الرئيسية القائلة أن مشكلات استراتيجيات التدريس واهتمام الطلاب باللغة لها دور كبير في إقاعة فهم الطلاب جيداً إضافة لذلك اقتراح الباحث عدة حلول لتلك المشاكل واستخدام الباحث منهجين هما المنهج التحليلي التجريبي والمنهج التحليلي الوصفي ، توصل الباحث إلى أن طلاب اللغة الانجليزية بجامعة شندي يواجهون مشكلة فهم القراءة جيداً ، ويوصي الدارس الطلاب بممارسة مهارة الفهم القرائي بالاضافة إلى تحديد مشاكلها ومعالجتها ، كما يوصي الأساتذة بمساعدة طلابهم وتحفيزهم وحثهم بممارسة فهم القراءة داخل وخارج القاعة ، ويوصي ايضاً بتوفير بيئة مريحة ومناسبة للطلاب
